What is a Writ?
A Writ is a formal written order issued by a court of law to provide a remedy for the violation of legal or fundamental rights. Writs can be filed against "State" authorities (Government departments, officials, agencies).
Constitutional Provisions
- Article 32: To the Supreme Court for violation of Fundamental Rights.
- Article 226: To the High Court for violation of Fundamental Rights or any other legal right.
Types of Writs
- Habeas Corpus: Against illegal detention ("Bring the body").
- Mandamus: To compel a public official to perform their duty.
- Certiorari: To quash an order passed by a lower court or authority.
- Prohibition: To prevent a lower court from exceeding its jurisdiction.
- Quo-Warranto: To challenge a person's right to hold a public office.
