APO / APP

Assistant Prosecution Officer / Assistant Public Prosecutor

Responsible for conducting prosecutions on behalf of the state in Magistrate Courts. Conducted by State PSCs (e.g., UPPSC, BPSC, RPSC).

JLO

Junior Legal Officer

Assists the government departments in legal matters, drafting, and appearing in courts. Noted exam: RPSC JLO.

District Attorney / Public Prosecutor

Higher level positions involving representation in Session Courts. Often requires minimum 7 years of practice experience at the bar.

Common Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

LLB Degree (3 or 5 years) from a BCI recognized University. In some states, specialized knowledge of local language is required.

Age Limit

Generally 21 to 40 years. Age relaxations apply for reserved categories as per state government rules.

Experience

For APO/JLO: Freshers are mostly eligible. For PP/Special PP: 7 to 10 years of active bar practice is usually mandatory.

Enrollment

Must be enrolled as an Advocate with any State Bar Council in India at the time of application.

Standard Examination Pattern

Stage 1: Preliminary Exam

Objective type (MCQs) covering Law (IPC, CrPC, Evidence Act) and Genral Studies/GS.

Stage 2: Written Examination (Mains)

Descriptive papers covering Substantive Law, Procedure Law, and Language (Hindi/English).

Stage 3: Interview

Personal interview to check the candidate's character, personality, and suitability for the post.
